[워싱턴 포스트지]MB는 부시의 충실한 애완견

미국에서 가장 대중적인 역량을 가지고 있는 4대 일간지중의 하나인 '워싱턴포스트The Washington Post'는 '쇠고기정국으로 시끄러운 서울Beefing with Seoul'이라는 제목의 칼럼에서

한국의 MB를 부시대통령의 애완견 LapDog(한국에서는 랩닥이라는 말을 자주 사용하지 않을텐데요. Lap이 무릎이잖아요. 그리고 Dog은 강아지구요. 주인의 무릎에서 재룡을 떠는 강아지... 즉 애완견이라는 뜻입니다. Pet보다 더 스윗하고 귀여워 죽겠다는 표현을 할때도 랩닥이라고 합니다. 그런데 사람에게 이 Lapdog을 사용했다는것은 굉장히 수치스러운것입니다. )

어찌되었건 워싱턴 포스트는 지난 4월 캠프데이빗을 찾았을때 부시의 공식적인 애완견인 영국의 토니 블레어를 위협할 정도로 강력한 애완견짓을 했으며 부시대통령에게 한국 방문을 절실하게 요구했고 부시대통령은 자신의 애완견의 간청을 들어 아마도 올해 하반기쯤에 서울을 방문할것이라고 합니다.

그러나 한국에서 미국산 쇠고기의 수입을 다시 시작하자 성난 한국 국민들의 시위가 계속해서 이어지고 있는 관계로 시위가 예상되는 서울을 피해 제주도에서 한국과 미국간의 정상회담을 열자고 백악관에 제안했으나 백악관측은 '좋은 생각같지 않다'라며 부시의 방한이 취소된 경위를 설명했습니다.

그리고 한국의 장관 고시 강행 방침을 전해들은 백악관은 한국과 미국의 앞으로의 관계에 큰 기대감을 나타냈으나 그럼에도 불구하고 부시 대통령은 한국이 아닌 일본에서 한국과 미국간의 정상이 만날것이라고 밝혔는데 이것은 정말 이명박 대통령의 크나큰 외교력의 한계라고 워싱턴 포스트는 지적하고 있습니다.

Beefing With Seoul

Back in April, when South Korean President Lee Myung-bak was feted at Camp David and touted as a strong contender to replace former British P.M. Tony Blair as the official Bush lap dog, Lee said Bush would be stopping in Seoul later this year.

Then came the huge protests over Lee's decision to allow importation ofU.S. beef, his polls nose-dived, and the inevitable government shake-upensued.

The beef deal went into renegotiation, but it was still assumed that President Bush would stop in Seoul after the Group of Eightsummit in Japan next month. Then the South Koreans started talkingabout a Bush-Lee meeting on Jeju Island, rather than in Seoul, wherehuge protests were pretty certain. The White House wasn't happy.

Then came news over the weekend that agreement had been reached onrestricting U.S. beef imports. "We're actually moving in a gooddirection on the beef deal," White House spokeswoman Dana Perinosaid yesterday. "All reports are that we have reached an agreement thatwe think that will actually hold and be able to work with PresidentLee's government." (Some close observers aren't so optimistic Lee willbe able to sell this deal to the Legislative Assembly.)

So the South Korea meeting is going to happen after all?

No, the White House said. The two leaders will see each other inJapan, but that's it for now. "We will certainly have anotheropportunity when we head into Asia in August," she said. "But this tripwill just be solely for the G-8."
